On the trail of an ancient people of the Messapian civilization (6th-7th century BC) to get to know the city of Ceglie Messapica, one of the “City States” of the land once called “Messapia”. The city is located 310m above sea level. The area is full of houses called Trulli, Lamie and Casedde. Traveling along the roads towards the South, the landscape changes so much that it reminds us of the flat Salento. Restored to its ancient splendor (April 2015), the natural sinkhole of “Foggia Vetere” is today an important wetland.
Following the narrow streets of the historic center you can visit the Archaeological Museum & Contemporary Art (finds from the Neolithic period to the Messapian period), the Piazza Vecchia and the Ducal Castle (12th century), the Church of San Domenico with the adjoining cloister of the convent of the Dominicans, the current headquarters of the International Gastronomy School “Med Cooking School”, the Messapian walls near the Belvedere over the Valle d’Itria, the Mother Church (16th century) and the Piazza del Plebiscito with the clock tower.
