Meeting with the guide in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, in Monopoli.
Monopoli is defined as the city of a hundred districts. The historic center is of great charm, founded on a fortified Messapian settlement from the 5th century. to. C., over the centuries it has been the subject of countless changes. Its oldest nucleus dates back to the Middle Ages, characterized by narrow and winding alleys that suddenly open onto small squares, surrounded by ancient houses.
The fulcrum of the old city is represented by the port, a deep natural inlet that guaranteed welcome and shelter to those who came from everywhere, first Greeks and Romans, then Venetians, Amalfi and finally Spaniards. During the walking tour visit the small castle located in a beautiful square. The houses and small buildings are charming. Walk under an arch that opens onto the sea and onto a long promenade along the harbour. This castle is very special, and the best part is the view of the blue sea of Monopoli, with the characteristic surroundings and the fishing port. Then admire the splendid baroque cathedral dedicated to the Madonna della Madia, protector of the city. It seems small, but it is actually huge and contains exquisite ornaments inside, elaborately decorated with gold and various types of colored marble. It contains several side altars, all magnificent. It is difficult to imagine a more beautiful city: alleys, arches, spiers, a fort, ancient walls, light coming from many directions, a beach with crystal clear water.
